"He took Porto Bello
with six ships only"
Nov. 22, 1739
The harbor of Porto Bello, Panama was a Spanish stronghold and depository for the silver & gold coins/cobs being shipped from Potosi, Bolivia and Lima, Peru. The cobs were shipped up the western coast of South America and transported across the jungles of Panama to the port of Porto Bello. Once arrived, they awaited shipment via Spanish galleons to Havana, Cuba and then to Spain. Britain's Admiral Vernon took the Spanish stronghold on Nov. 22, 1739. It was celebrated as a great victory in England where these medals were struck. Admiral Vernon became a popular hero, and was himself commemorated in several places, perhaps most famously Mount Vernon, later the estate of George Washington. Washington's older, half brother and mentor, Lawrence Washington, served under Admiral Vernon during the capture of Porto Bello and Cartegena, Panama.
